In July 2012, Marlies Christiaens was awarded the degree of MSc. in Bioscience Engineering option environmental technology at Ghent University. With her master thesis about the combined effects of heat and cadmium toxicity in plants, she was one of the laureates of the ArcelorMittal-Environment price in cooperation with Indaver. During her education, she did a voluntary international internship in Unesco-IHE, Delft, where she worked on the optimal growth conditions for microalgae to combine CO2-fixation, biomass production, and wastewater treatment. Currently, she is a PhD candidate and academic assistant at CMET.
